I knew that when we started this farmhouse makeover, that I needed to incorporate some old vintage wooden chicken crates somewhere.
So I scoured Pinterest and everywhere else and found that old wooden chicken crates would be perfect for a coffee table.
Actually, I wanted the coffee table to be in the middle of the room but we have different plans for that so stay tuned!
We looked in all our go-to places to find a chicken crate: Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, my garage sale apps that I use, and we finally found one!
If you would like to know what kinds of apps that I use to look for items, sign up for our newsletter and you’ll get a printable that lists all of them that I use!
The only problem is that it was roughly 2 hours away.
But we decided to make the trip to check it out and it was perfect!
We paid and loaded it into the car and decided to stop at some local flea markets on the way home.
Wouldn’t you know that at the first flea market we stopped at, there were 2 more of those awesome chicken crates for half the price that we paid for the 1!!
So of course we snatched those up too because who doesn’t need 3 chicken crates?!!!
I decided that I wanted to make shelves out of 1 other crate and sell the last one. So today you’re getting a two-fer!! Yay!!!
So here’s what we did to turn the old chicken crates into our coffee table and wall shelf.

Clean, clean, clean!!!
When you get chicken crates, you have to remember that it used to be full of, you guessed it….chickens!
So where you have chickens, you also have feathers, feed and poop. Years and years of built up poop!! 😬
First I vacuumed them really good and used the skinny crevice tool to get in every little nook.
Then I washed them down with the water hose.
I knew just washing them with water wouldn’t get the job done so I also gave both of them a good scrubbing with soap and water.
So now that they are all clean and dry, it’s time to sand and varnish.
The DeWalt hand sander was perfect to use for this project.
It’s really important to sand with several grits of sandpaper so the wood won’t have any splinters and can be dusted easier later.
I decided to use this triple thick varnish because I like the way it looks and feels after it dries
This step is all about figuring how to make the chicken crates useful for your home.
For the coffee table, I found some spindles at Lowe’s but they were too tall for what I needed. I’ll use those for another project!
So we went back to Lowe’s and found the perfect legs for our table.
They are actually deck post tops but they were the best height and thickness to make the table.
I spray painted them using my usual Tropical Oasis by Valspar and sanded the edges when they were dry to make them look more rustic.
Holes were drilled in the bottom of the table so the legs can be screwed to it.
Once the legs were put in place, it was finished!
My plan is to buy a lot of photo albums and fill them with family photos to put in the table.
Now we started working on the shelf for the other chicken crate.
We removed the back and screwed two pieces of wood to make the shelves.
The process would’ve been a whole lot easier but the back pretty much broke into pieces when we took it off.
So we made another back with particle board and screwed it to the back and to the shelves so they would stay in place.
I didn’t get any pictures of the new back. Nothing fancy but it got the job done. 😊
Here are the finished products for both the chicken crate coffee table and the chicken crate shelf. They turned out fabulous!!
That’s it! The project was not too difficult and we were thrilled with the results of both of them.
What do you think? Do you have any ideas on how to decorate with chicken crates?
